Understanding Your Financial Options

Financial Help for Grandfamilies

Taking on the care of a grandchild can bring unexpected financial strain—from daily expenses to long-term planning.

You may be eligible for assistance through programs such as MassHealth, WIC, the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), and more. These programs can help cover costs related to food, healthcare, childcare, and other essentials.

Eligibility often depends on your custody status, the child’s needs, and sometimes your age or income level. We’ve outlined key resources below to help you understand what’s available and how to apply.

Child Only Grants—Temporary Assistance to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC)

If you are your grandchild’s guardian through Probate and Family Court, you may qualify for a Child-Only TAFDC Grant through the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA).

Childcare Vouchers
If you’re a working grandparent or kin caregiver receiving TAFDC, you may be eligible for a childcare voucher:

  • Talk to your DTA case manager to apply.
  • You may also qualify through the Dept. of Early Education and Care: Learn how at Mass 211

If you’re age 55+, ASAPs can provide information and referral services for individuals and caregivers, including grandparents raising grandchildren. Be sure to ask about the Family Caregiver Support Program for potential financial assistance, such as camperships.

If you receive SNAP or other DTA benefits, you can use your EBT card for free or discounted admission to museums, theaters, and more.

Children in your care may qualify for free or low-cost health insurance.

SNAP provides financial support for groceries. SNAP is a federal nutrition program administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA).

If your grandchild is under age 5, they may be eligible for WIC nutrition support, including free healthy food and services.
