The Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren will be convening workshops this fall throughout Massachusetts. Each workshop is approximately three hours long. A guest speaker will present at each workshop a topic important to relative caregivers. Each presentation will be followed by an information panel, which includes representatives from agencies who work with grandparents raising grandchildren and relative caregivers such as DTA, DCF, Masshealth, WIC, Elder Services, and more. Local community support providers will also be present.
Topic: Navigating Parental Substance Use While Raising Grandchildren
Date: 11/21/2024
Time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Zoom
We’re excited to share that we’re piloting a new program to provide even more support and guidance for you following this workshop!
Any grandparent raising a grandchild (or relative caregiver) who participates in the workshop will be eligible to receive one (1) one-hour consult (via zoom) with a clinician from Riverside Trauma Center within 30 days of the workshop. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with experts regarding any specific concern or question that a caregiver feels was left unanswered after the workshop.
What sort of questions would be right for a consult? Examples include, but are not limited to, the following:
When should I explain to my 3-year grandchild that her mother died from an overdose?
How should I decide if my 13-year old grandchild should have unsupervised visits with his father if I have concerns that the father has relapsed? And how do I explain that?
It’s our hope that these conversations with Riverside experts will provide you with the confidence and comfort needed to provide care to those who need you most (including yourself!)
The last day to request a Riverside consult following this workshop is December 12, 2024. An e-mail will be sent to all who attend the workshop with more information along with a simple form to complete to request a consult. The Riverside Trauma Center Team will review the requests and respond to schedule a zoom session.
Please note:
These consults are not intended to replace a therapy session, be an assessment or evaluation of a person, or be utilized as a crisis intervention.
Not all requests for consults may be deemed appropriate for this format. The Riverside team, in collaboration with the GP Commission, may determine that a referral to the Kinship Navigator Program may be the best course of action, or other alternative actions. The caregiver will receive a response either way.
